I do this a couple of times a year Cos when I lube the chain I clean it up with WD40, but after a while it gets very sticky and dirt clings to it even more. You should see the state of chains on Spaniard's bikes.....I don't think they have any idea whatsoever that it's a regular item of maintenance.
