Indeed, Bob, the old guys keep finding the same list over and over and post it forgetting the reason they first made it is to reply to each other in previous threads just like this one.

Having said that, I don't need a list :classic_laugh::

Just now, Pedro said:

I did own a Vincent for a few days once, but it was never in my name so doesn't count.

I had a XT500 years ago that I rode around for a couple of months until my mate passed his test.

I also had a CCM450GP in my garage for a couple of months.  I only rode it twice , the second time was to confirm to myself that it was as shit as I thought the first time I rode it  :classic_laugh:

What do you think of the R65 as a classic to be used today?

I think it would be fine if well looked after but that is the point really.    If you were happy to balance carbs and do all the maintenance yourself don't see why not, if you were paying a dealer it could mount up.   Mine was surprisingly thirsty for what is was also.    I bought mine on the strength of an article I read about R65's when I was still at school, classed as sort of uncompetitive then in 1979 against the Japanese opposition.  I hankered after one from that time on.  Looking back I found the R100 a much better bike.

The carbs are always the weak point on older bikes and spares can be a problem, an R65 would need better valve seat inserts to cope with current ethanol fuel content as well. I would recommend swapping out all the fuel lines and carb floats as well.

Spares aren't a problem you can buy practically anything for then from Germany, you used to be able (haven't checked recently) to buy modern fuel injection kits to fit to the old aircooled twins, as well as upgraded alternators  and many other bits. Granted probably not from BMW themselves but there is no end of specialist support for these bikes.    It's all about money and how you measure the practicality of running a 30 or 40 year old aircooled twin and how much you really want to do it.
