Got a new computer

The old one that I got in 2009 finally gave up the ghost, it wasn't the exact same one as it was like Captain Cooks axe, ten new heads and twenty new handles but it did well for all those years, actually I think that the only original part was the power supply, well that's the way that it goes I guess.

The new ones reasonable specs Ryzen 7 with matching GPU, 32G RAM, 500G SSD, Bluetooth and WiFi coupling, that sort of thing, it makes for a cleaner desk, running Win 11 pro which takes patience after Win 7 since 2009 but that's the way that the cookie crumbles, to many things these days won't run on 7, that's not to say that I might go back to it but I'll try this new OS and see how I go.

Here's a little game for you, spot the new tower.

You’d probably get twice the amount of conspiracy theories though 🤪

Conspiracy theories are easy to find, its a matter of observation.

Been meaning to ask you:

my macbook air is 9 years old now, it’s not led an easy life since it’s been a passenger on most of my touring and most weekend rides, including all the extreme heat that goes with often going to southern Portugal inside a plastic box. It got a new battery 3 or 4 years ago, but is starting to need another, I never felt that the replacement matched the original. Now, I’m determined to make it last 10 years of use, and it will, but after that would there be a rebuild that should be done or am I better with getting a new faster better one, will it in fact be better?

There’s things that will start to fail slowly on this one, like the charging port magnet, the left caps key, plus it could do with being faster connecting to wifi and dealing with the windows modulator that I use to update an excel spreadsheet from a spanish server. It could be the spanish server fucking it all up, for being spanish, but it’s also a 9 year old laptop on this side.

The question, new macbook air when this one turns 10? It’s got cool stickers you see :classic_laugh:

I have been looking forward to Apple coming out with another 12 inch one, the 13 inch lives snug inside my panniers but a smaller one would be more insulated and maybe allow for soft luggage. In actual work it would probably suck, though.

I never thought I would say this but Buckster is spot on, an Apple Silicone MacBook Air is what you need.  I have the M1 which is coming on for 4 years old and it still blows me away by how good it is.    I promise you it will be a revelation. Compared to your old MacBook which must be an intel machine given the timeframe.
But still fix your old one as well, still a viable machine.  Replacement batteries are never as good but if you could source a Duracell or one from Ifixit it would be a good bet.     Bear in mind that your older Mac will be stretched by newer software and that will also affect battery life and longevity.

Well, it is decided, then. Laptop shall turn 10 and then get replaced. I’d like to see a 12 inch come along to give that a look, though.

You could always have a look at the new iPad Pro 11” with Magic Keyboard depending on what you want to do with it, go to the Apple shop and have a play, the new Air has a smaller footprint now anyway as the screen has less of a bezel around it so you may find the 13” is the size you want.

I am not very computer oriented, can't cope with an iPad. I bought one with the keyboard a while ago, specifically so it could travel on flexible bags better than the laptop, but it just made everything really hard to do. Simple things like having a spreadsheet open and working on that while writing an email at the same time while looking at both, and maybe copying a few cells onto the email. Stuff like that became so complicated I just gave up and gave it to my brother. Now, on top of all that I also update a few files from a server that only works with Microsoft so have a modulator to do that.

The new 13 being overall smaller sounds good to me, good times ahead!
