Up the Fosse

Today we were due a break between the howling winds that Tym kindly sent over from his flag island so it was a good chance to go for a trail ride.  Only one destination in mind and that was the Fosseway, nice and steady and a good way to worm my way back in as my last trail ride was June 2021 .

I met Tony at Castle Combe and we set off for Summer Lane but that was blocked by a fallen tree, so backtrack and straight onto the Fosseway at Fossegate.  Lots of puddles and fallen branches to avoid but apart from that no dramas until we stopped at the ford, no fording today so we took the bridge instead.............

There was some evidence on an unsucessful previous attempt by someone else............

We carried on another couple of miles until coming across this coming towards us.  I asked the driver if it was ok to take some photos as I had never seen a carriage on a byway before...........

At the junction with the Kemble road we took the UCR around the airfield.  Stopped here to open a gate, you can see planes in the background.................

We wern't sure if the AV8 cafe was open or not as it had been closed for a couple of months.  When we got there we found out why, it probably takes a fair while to manouvere a jumbo jet into a position where it can greet you as park in the cafe car park  😲

After a nice cup of coffee and watching several light aircraft taking off in fairly gusty winds we made oue way over to some lanes south of Cirencester..............

and then found a handy bench to sit on and eat our sandwiches on a farm track south of Malmesbury   👍

From there we rode a couple more lanes before parting on the A420.  I rode down to a local garage with a jet wash to get rid of the mud and than made my way back home.

It was great to ride a bike on loose surfaces again and feel it moving about beneath me and the bonus was not a single badger 😉

Are you able to sneak along the restricted parts of the Fosse way Bob or is it no go now

In Gloucestershire it's all byway Fred so all legal.  There are some parts in Somerset that are no go nowadays.  You're not thinking of the Ridgeway are you ?

It's an old map to be fair Fred it's an old map.  You need to come over some time, we could do the Fosse, Macmillian Way and some other lanes to make a day of it.

Hmmm that's a 2021 map if i go to the the larger scale it shows that bit as a restricted byway now, i was asking because i can remember doing it on the XR many years ago being led about by some lads from that way

As for your offer i'm determined to drag the dog your way this year to be led about by someone :littleguy:

That's even more strange as that bit has new (official highway) signs warning you to slow down because of the traffic coming out of Upper Fosse Farm :classic_wacko:

Yes that is strange i keep forgetting about the GRM and that shows it as legal (green = good to go) weird maybe it has had its status overturned and the OS maps haven't caught up yet
