Had a leaky fork at work yesterday so I tried making one of those seal cleaners out of an old milk bottle and had a bit of a scrape last night. It seemed to stop the leak, but the ride to work tomorrow will let me know for sure. Gave the Kriega fork cover things a clean up and refitted them, quite a bit of grit loose inside the one on the leaky fork, but clean as a whistle on the fork that is behaving, so I'm hoping that was all it was.6 points

That’ll do nicely but things are a bit tight money-wise at the moment so I may just have to sit tight……….I could always sell my body to get the extra cash, that way I could probably afford the mirrors after a couple of months.4 points

It's very simple , Honda and the oil barons have a shit load of 10W30 to get rid of. I'll stick to the 10w40 for now2 points

Fuck that, I don’t care how good the new TA is meant to be that is one boring looking bike. Honda have out-done their sensible tag.2 points

I’ve been busy being a cockney wanker. However, you’re correct about the Tracer. Lovely bike and a blast on the roads but man-o-man do I miss the ability to head off into the great unknown. Can’t bring myself to sell the Tracer and dirt bike options are severely limited by my available budget. I’m not going down the route of buying a shit heap with the aspiration of making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Currently looking at a cheap-ish e-mountain bike………….who knows.2 points

Wasn't the bike a bit unstable on one leg and crutches, i thought you had a ramp LOL2 points

So @XTreme: Viscosity is how thin or thick an oil is, like honey is thicker than olive oil when pouring out of a bottle. 10 would be olive oil, 60 would be honey. Weight in oils comes from a time when you couldn't engineer oils to be single weight, they would be a 10, a 20, etc, but all thicker cold than hot. Now they can engineer oils to act like a 10 when cold but act like a 30 or 40 or 50 when hot. The first number, 10W, means viscosity of 10 at W which means Winter, cold temperatures. A 10W30 and 10W40 will act the same at start up when the engine is cold at the same cold temperature. Usually, a motorcycle manual will allow for weather and ambient temperatures, meaning the manufacturer might adjust advisement that the same engine will make oil run hotter being raced hard on 40º Spain than going for a bimble on 15º England, hence they sometimes recommend a 10W40 for 5º/20º temperatures but 20W50 for 15º/40º ambient temperatures. If Honda says Loncin makes that engine to be used with 10W30 in all uses in all temperatures, I would respect that. No modern engine benefits from using thicker oils than recomended except in very extreme conditions, however, do check if Honda doesn't recommend 10W40 for warm temperatures. It's a light engine, with tight clearances and meant to run with little internal frictions to aid economy and performance, makes sense that it uses a light oil. Does not make sense that it doesn't want a fully synthetic oil, though.1 point

I can do oil changes you twat! But when you're nearly 70 and suffering with a Hernia you really don't feel much like doing it.1 point

I found this on the CB500X forum.......the guy seems to know what he's talking about! 10W30 is a multigrade oil. When it is cold it has a viscosity of 10 (the weight of the oil) which means that it is thin. Exactly what you need in a cold engine. When the temperature is +100°C the oil has a viscosity of 30 (somewhat thicker). Again: exactly what you need with a warm engine. Switching to 10W40 is not a disaster: your cold engine runs with the same thin oil (viscosity 10) but when it has +100°C, it will run with a thicker oil (40). A thicker oil could be used when the engine is somewhat worn out as it offers a bit more protection. Remember: thicker oil is harder to pump around.1 point

They advise not to use full synth in them! And anyway, with my oil changing routine of 3000 kms it wouldn't be worth it because longevity isn't a factor in my case.1 point
-
If you care enough to use specific oil then use fully synthetic. It’s probably 10w30 to make less drag on the engine and make it that tiny bit better on fuel, some race engines are the same and you can feel the difference at really high rpms as they turn more freely.1 point

Not sure but that's what the book says so that's what it has. The Beta is 10-50 so i have to buy 3 different oils for the bikes. Before the new bike's i got, everything took 10-40 semi so i just had one 20l drum it was so simple. Now i have to buy expensive stuff as well1 point

Same on the CRF Pete. stupid thing is i couldn't buy genuine Honda oil from a Honda dealer but i can buy it in M&P's Swansea1 point
