yeh, i never think how im braking , must be habit of touching rear first . dont think the tyre helps

Don't panic you'll get used to it, it'll improve your riding once you feel things moving around underneath you .  Back brake locking up is a normal occurance

A claw hammer is the way to go, it's abit gorey but you get used to it.
