Booger 450

Marcel

Recommended Posts

One of my son's riding buddies call yesterday and sent me a Pic...he booger up the threads in his drain plug.... from the pic yesterday looked like he only cross threaded the first few threads...figured just running a tap to fix up the threads at the start it would have been fine cause the drain plug was long enough to catch solid threads..but it was worse than I thought...he over tightened it and pulled out all of the threads from the entire length of the drain plug...and Its a brand new bike..2026...it has to be overzied now...with a helicoil...what a fucken mess..not sure I want to take the risk to drill out the case...think Im not going to bother with it now...can't see from the pic..but like 3 threads in there's a hole inside the drain plug hole..looks to be a drain hole of somekind...not sure exactly what id be drilling into..or have metal shaving floating around in there...

You need to pull the sump to stop swarf getting up into the good stuff.

Really don't need the headache to mess with....have no idea if those KX have somekind of warranty...or to get the blame if the engine fails down the road...lol....told him to take it to the dealer where he bought it...

Not sure exactly what he was thinking of buying a full on race motocross for trail riding....looking at the bike maintenance schedule...lol.

Looking through the manual...kx 450x ...don't appear to have any type of warranty...

Replace piston rings every 15 hrs....lol.

Don't really know the kid , but don't know who's more stupid...the kid or the salesman who sold him this bike.... think he's  a kid from a single parent household.

Looks like there's plenty of space for a repair. I'd go insert rather than a heli-coil.
Fire compressed air in the oil filler while cutting a new thread, will keep the alloy coming out.

The only thing I have on hand is heli- coils...yes and insert would be definitely   better...but Im not buying a kit for it...lol...i guess the local yamaha dealer has a insert kit on hand...told him to bring it there...

He needs to get himself a proper torque wrench...the crush washer is so flatten out...its fused to the drain plug.

Wish I could have taken a better pic of the drain plug hole...three or four threads in it opens up...looks like a drain for one of the side cases...so when the oil plug is fully in...almost half of the length of the drain plug isn't engaging in anything...who ever will be drilling that out will have to be really careful the drill shoot to one side...

Anyway don't know much about these 450 4 stroke..other than power wize , its on par with a 250 2 stroke and if the engine blows up , it cost a fortune to repair...i guess you'd be better just buying a new bike...lol

Piston rings at every 15 hrs....you've got to be shitting me....lol.

Here's the official maintenance from Kawi....

Still...piston and rings every 40 hrs...to prevent  catastrophic engine failure ...

You are overestimating @Marcel's mechanical acumen, if he can't fix it with a hammer then he can't fix it.

Long story short: Your sons friend asked you for help fixing a thread on an oil plug, being a master mechanic you sent him to a dealership.

Honestly if the bike would have been a few years old..I might have risk it...the frigen thing is only a few month old...and just found out that the Yamaha dealer only has heli-coils to repair the thing...not the best to repair a oil plug...
