I was fairly clued up 20 years ago playing with PCs but had Macs for a good while now.
Decided to do a reinstall as my Mac has slowed and kept knocking off the wifi for no visible reason and having to restart.
After loosing the hard drive in recovery I have now got it all working again but for some reason my hard drive is now 80gig short of the size it should be so can't load all my backed up data, maybe it was time for a sort out anyway.

A couple of years ago mine decided to have a go slow and do erratic things. I messed about with it for a bit but then the HDD failed. I managed to get someone to recover the data luckily, and I do back ups more frequently now….

I think that is the sign to get a new SSD quick smart.

Could well be right but it's such a bum hole to get apart.

Apple products DO have their share of issues.... My CAD station machine is an absolute Dinosaur...but still works (knock on wood). I've been surfing etc. on a Google Chromebook for the last 7 yrs. with NO problems. I keep my important data on a 750 gig remote hard drive.

Pay someone wont cost that much.   Which model is it?  If you get the exact model number there is bound to be a how too on Youtube.
