Me and my older brother Tim have always pulled things to bits to put back together again. Started with push bikes and went on from there. We used to go down all the back ways to people houses to see what dead electricals, push bikes and motorbikes were there and very often they'd let us have them. Used to visit the tip on a regular basis too. TVs we'd palm off around the family but the best bike parts would be swopped onto our own bikes.
Motorbikes we'd get going a rag around the local corn fields.
Had my first car at 13 from a relative, "if you can get it off the drive it's yours". Had to sell off some bikes etc to keep petrol in it.
None of this would of happen without dads tool kit and him allowing us to just get on with it.
