They love their Brit bikes there Saul!

Doesn't hurt that there is a Triumph and BSA dealer 20 miles up the road.  But you are right lots of Brit and Merican stuff.

Still on the NZ plate :classic_laugh:

After talking to the owner I get the feeling it has never been UK registered.  I think he may have been riding it illegally for the last 50 years.  🤣  He didn't say so but he winked when I asked him about the NZ plate.  Rugged Individualist 😉

  3. Met up with 3 mates at 4 Turnings garage this morning at 9:00am.   Martin on his R80 with R100 engine and running gear.     Chris on his Triumph Scrambler 900, Gary on his 1974 Triumph Bonny, Me and my Shadow on the Hornet.
We set off on the A390 through Lostwithiel then on up the A38  and Liskeard by pass.   Turned off and went inland to Callington then took the Gunnislake Road turning off to Kitt Hill and then Louis Cafe.
Gary lead as his bike was the slowest and he openly admits he can't see much over 70 mph because of the vibes.   God only knows why he takes the bloody thing.    He has a Ducati Monster and while not as pretty it is a much more capable bike.   Course Shadow moaned as we could go fast, traffic and Gary.   Not that I ever push to hard but it was slow going.
Got there around 9:40 and pretty quiet so we didn’t have a breakfast que.    £14 for two sausage baps and two cans of fizz.   Twas nice but felt spendy, maybe I am just tight 👍

After breakfast we headed back to Callington and took the road down to Saltash then on to Carkeel and the back road to Looe.   Mooched around Polperro then back to Plynt, Lostwithiel again St Blazey and home.  Great day out, loads of bikes and traffic though.   Suppose it is bound to happen this time of year.

Very old Sunbeam on a NZ plate.   Apparently the owner bought it in NZ on a round the world sailing trip. Road it around NZ stripped and packed it away in his sailing boat and brought it back to Cornwall 50 years ago.   Still riding it today.   Interesting old chap.

  7. I am a bit conflicted about them, I think they look cool as hell in the flesh but they also remind me of a locomotive.  I just can't imagine living with something that big, bit of adverse camber or gravel when you put your fit down.  😳  Imagine trying to paddle it backwards for any reason.  Just to big and bloody heavy to my mind.

Yeah, fair enough - point taken. 👍

To be honest it’s probably time I pushed off anyway, not least because arrangements were finally made yesterday for the sale of my bike. It’s been almost a year now since my accident and my hand is probably as good as it’s going to get, which isn’t anywhere near good enough to ride safely over any distance. I’ve never been into bimbling around locally, and as even the short journey into work last week was agony I have to face the fact that my riding days – and certainly the big European jaunts that I used to enjoy best - are a thing of the past.

I think part of the trouble is that for nearly everything else my hand is pretty much fine, so I just assume that the next time I get on the bike it’ll probably be OK – or at any rate better. But it’s not. The only other thing that has the same effect is some power tools – large angle grinders and demolition hammers in particular, it seems; bloody excruciating until you stop, and then pins and needles or burning in the fingertips a day or so later for however long it lasts. And as much as I love riding, I love music far more, and a bass player with fingers that are too numb to play is no good to anyone. The clincher was that the MOT is due this month, and as the place I go to also sold my last two bikes for me it just seems logical to take it there and leave it with them. It will be a wrench, but I daresay the cash will go a long way towards softening the blow.

I’ll also be honest and say that having lurked on here for a while, a big part of the reason I finally joined (other than to annoy Buckster, of course 😉) was that after a year away from riding I was really feeling pretty out of it, and I think perhaps I was looking for something that reconnected me to it somehow... I dunno… I realise that sounds a bit wanky. Maybe it was just to annoy Buckster after all… 🙂

But at the end of the day this is a motorbike forum, and regardless of any kind words that might be offered to the contrary I really don’t belong here. I have nothing relevant to contribute. The occasional story or daft anecdote might make people smile from time to time, but you’ll tire of that soon enough. Or I will – people always underestimate the effort it takes to be this fascinating. At any rate, the point at which I become boring is the point at which my departure is overdue.

And so, with my sincerest best wishes to every one of you, I’ll quietly pull the plug. To borrow Hunter S Thompson’s last words: “Relax – this won’t hurt…”

I would be sad to see you go, I enjoy your content.   I think what you post is thought provoking and entertaining.   Doesn’t hurt giving Buckster the needle either both of your to and fro interactions are fascinating, to me anyway.

  9. To be completely objective they look pretty good in the flesh.   I know that doesn't make them reliable or worth anything second hand but I think their day will come, and no I won't buy one.   I remember Nathan the Postman is selling his X-Cape and struggling to do so or was in the last video I watched.  He also said the X-Cape felt low on power.

How much would your house be worth now Saul?

An identical one to mine but with half the garden sold last month for £336,000.  But its just numbers everything down here is £200,000 plus.  Just think of trying to raise that sort of mortgage.  Just not going to happen unless you are pushing £40 to 50k a year and who the fuck earns that in rural Cornwall.  Not many I would argue.

I don’t see it that way. I’ve had arthritis on my right hand’s fingers, it didn’t in the slightest make it harder to pick a bike up but would have made riding very painful had it been on the left hand’s fingers. Had it not gotten better I would have no doubt about having something like that now.

I do think you’re right partially, it’s a gimmick to provide a novelty factor to be talked about and help justify increasing prices, but at the same time demographics mean most bikers tend to be older and this richer than when most bikers were young.

Fair enough if it's something you need but I do feel it is mostly unnecessary marketing wank.    Like electric handbrakes in cars.  Perhaps I just have my luddite head on today.  🤣  Can't see me ever buying anything like that but I am happy for other to do exactly what they want with their money.

Not a joke though, and if that’s why people go for one then fairplay to them.

It is a joke though, should you really be on a bike that size and weight with arthritis and bad legs regardless of how you change gear?    I think is more to attract with the generation of riders that aren't used to manual gearboxes and clutches whilst driving cars.   Targeting Mericans, mostly I would have thought.

  13. Just been up to Damerells again as I want them to look at my Shadows bike.    Got to go on my own as Shadow has gone to Newquay with her brother on the train.   I can honestly say it was a joy to be out bimbling around the backroads on her CB125F.  Just back to basics fun in the sun.  I did have to travel along the old A30 across Goss moor for 3 miles which was a bit more exposed.   The bikes max with me on it was 62 mph and pretty vibie. Not where it likes to be but that was the only negative of the ride.   Get to do it all again next Thursday when it is booked in.

Not unlike north Norfolk, parts of Wales, southwold and the lakes.

Anywhere that's not soulless urban sprawl it seems like.   The rural parts of Britain is becoming an enclave for the rich and entitled, anyone that actually lives and works there are eventually driven out by generation.    My kids will never be able to get a house where I live.    Fine for me that my ex local authority house is worth stupid money but what's the point if my family have to leave.  It's just beyond shit and the community is ripped apart.

Very brave of BMW, to put that in that new 1300, shows they're confident with recals and having dealers work for free fixing bikes :classic_laugh:

It's smart of manufacturers to do these robotic gearboxes, making it easy for people with arthritis and bad legs to continue buying a riding expensive bikes.

Very true given the ageing demographic of bikers.  🤣
