Valve check done on Saturday, all within spec. Did at my mates workshop with him watching over. He is much better qualified than me plus has all the tools. Anyway took no photos, he is keen on privacy. I didn’t really care, also looks to me like they were checked at the last service but of course a guess. Carbs off and on again to day, I neglected to fit new fuel lines after doing them. A mistake that is fixed now. Got fitting the carbs off to a fine art although it took some swearing to learn it. Got some electrickery to sort, new indicators, heated grips, voltmeter, usb charging and stuff to sort than I should be on the road.

Wish they offered the option thoe....seriously who would want to do any serious off road on a Pan- am...those things are ridden 99% of the time pavement ..think I've ridden the indian more often off road than most Pan- am owners...lol.
-
Oops !!!! My mistake..your right.
-
-
It certainly does, I know someone with one, he has a Scott Oiler on it.
-
The Pan American uses a chain, though.
-
I have been riding a belt drive bike a lot longer than you.
-
The 305 was a 1986 model, i had it around 1995, and if I member correctly it had 22,000+ miles on the clocks, it handled fine, and was fast enough for the riding I did, but for a 305cc bike it felt very small,

WTF !!!...they got a special on Russian vodka ?....lol.
-
Are you a believer now ...lol...belt drive...
-
I think and average for the KTM, 20 thousand km before the chain would start slapping around..that's with good service, cleaned, lube, tension checked almost every time...it has 90 thousand km now...you do the math..chain and sprocket every 20...sure belt wouldn't work on most adventure bike but 90 % are used on roads anyways Pan- Am not sure I've heard anything negative about the belts..150 hp...think most manufacturers have miss the boat on this one...
-
‘08 and the belt is in good shape, I check it on a regular basis and keep the tension right.
-
09 ? The belt is 17 years-old , how the belt looking..any visible cracks ?
-
Just 60,000
-
You must be getting close to 100 thousand miles...what's the mileage ?

https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/kawasaki/kawasaki_gpz305.htm I remember the belts being a known issue of the GPz305's. That was many years ago though. I know you can get belt kits for many various bikes now. My only experience is helping my mate set such a kit up on his Royal Enfield 650. I didn't like the amount of tension he had to set it at. Just a gut feeling but I wouldn't run a chain tight like that. His money his choice, I didn't mind as he was the guy who gave me the xSystem Scottoiler that is now on my Hornet.
-
The belts today ...to me are pretty well indestructible , the technologie must have improved greatly....not to brag or anything, 122hp at the crank , almost 130 in torque and the thing weight a ton , no way in hell would chain and sprockets last for 100 thousand miles , just the time and lube you save over years...doesn't make sence to me...
-
It’s the original belt.
-
Have you ever replaced the belt on your bike @Buckster ? How many years has it been on...?
-
How many years ago was that Clive ...year and mileage ? I can't fantom snapping a belt with a 300cc , unless it was the earlier years when they first came out....and the belts weren't has good I guess...
-
Mine may have lasted longer if I had known about the oil strainer/pickup blocking problem.
-
I had a GPZ 305, the belt on that snapped, I went to the Kawasaki dealer for a new one....he said "That will be £150 please!" ......I converted it to chain, think the kit cost me £40........then the damn thing devoured it's camshaft....
-
I always heard good things about the GPZ 305.....1 of the few small bore belt drive bikes...

https://www.china-parts.co.uk/ I used i used these peeps when i used to fix the school lads bikes for them..scoots and bikes. Lots of carbs BLR'ed and coils some switch gear and ecu's...main faults..Engines seem ok, like all small motors they need oil cahnges at about 800miles cycles..Only ones i had that would have costalot were some of the scooters...Bin them chassis on some rot.
