  2. The Indian Company Takes Over the British Brand In a £16million (roughly $20 million) cash deal, Norton Motorcycles became a TVS Motors brand. According to Motorcycle News, the Indian giant’s offer was selected by BDO—the company overseeing the administration of Norton. Both BDO and Indian confirmed the deal. Actually a subsidiary of TVS Motors owns Norton. The subsidiary of TVS will need “to work closely with customers in building the success and pre-eminence of Norton” and the employees of Norton will transfer over to TVS. Norton will continue to operate out of its current manufacturing facility for the next six months. After that TVS will need to figure out where to take the manufacturing. “In challenging circumstances, we have been able to secure the future of the Norton brand,” said Joint Administrator Lee Causer. “We are delighted that the sale to TVS Motor Company will protect jobs and provide a highly beneficial outcome to creditors.” Mr Sudarshan Venu, Joint Managing Director, TVS Motor Company said that this is momentous event for his company and sounded excited about the prospect of Norton Motorcycles and the future of the company. “Norton will continue to retain its distinctive identity with dedicated and specific business plans,” he said. “TVS Motor will work closely with customers and employees in building the success and pre-eminence of the Norton Motorcycles brand and we look forward to growing together globally in the years to come.” The company’s immediate plans are to continue with the brand’s current lineup, including the upcoming Atlas series of motorcycles. That’s good news. Norton wasn’t making bad motorcycles, it was just horribly mismanaged as a company. Hopefully, TVS will be able to take the brand and make it into the motorcycle company it should be. This isn’t the end that many people wanted for Norton. A lot of folks wanted to keep Norton British, but it makes the most sense, and I’m honestly excited to see TVS take over. It would have been neat to see Triumph or some other British company take Norton on, but I have no issue with TVS taking the reigns here. I think the company will do right by the brand. Time will tell. The post TVS Motors Bought Norton Motorcycles appeared first on webBikeWorld. Source
  3. The German Baby Naked Bike The BMW G 310 R is one of the best small naked motorcycles out there. The G 310 GS is one of the best small adventure bikes out there. They’re reasonably priced, quick and nimble, and generally a good bikes for commuting or for beginners. BMW seems to have updated versions of the bikes. These versions will help keep the bikes fresh and competing well with the competition. RideApart has some good spy shots of the bikes out testing. They were spotted by a spy photographer and the publication shared them. In the photos, you can see some minor updates from an aesthetic standpoint. You can’t tell if there have been upgrades to the powerplant from the photos, but it is likely the case due to the always tightening emissions standards. Euro 5 compliance is right around the corner and with the G 310 R and G 310 GS being global bikes, it only makes sense for BMW to do a revamp of the engine. The company likely figured if it was going to update the engine, it might as well do some subtle reworking from a styling standpoint. The G 310 R looks sharper and more angular, but only slightly. The GS version is more of the same. It will probably launch sometime this year, but BMW has not made a statement about the models. 4. Four Lucky Heros Will Get a Slingshot The Coronavirus is causing all sorts of issues all around the world, and the essential workers who are still making the world go round are the unsung heroes in this time of crisis. Polaris wants to recognize them. The company is going to give four unsung heroes a Slingshot free of charge for three months. The rental is a way for the company to say thank you to these people. To win, all that needs to happen is for a person to submit a Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter post explaining the hero’s story and how they are “battling through adversity, lending support, or committed to their trade during these trying times.” One winning submission will be awarded every two weeks until early June. Who qualifies? According to the press release, the person can be a medical professional, a first responder, a grocery worker, an educator teaching remotely, a seamstress making medical supplies, food delivery folks, stay-at-home moms, or really anyone who has had to step up during the Coronavirus outbreak. You can learn more information about this program at the company’s website for the Slingshot. While this won’t help get rid of the virus any sooner, it should help the people doing their jobs feel slightly better. 5. From Autos to Superbikes When you hear the name Bilstein you probably think cars, right? Well, that may change. The company will start manufacturing high-performance suspension for superbikes. First up? The BMW S 1000 RR. This adds another big player to the superbike suspension competition. Bilstein is a key player in the automotive suspension world, so why shouldn’t it compete here? I like it. Blistein noted that this isn’t the company’s first foray into motorcycle suspension. The company has been making Bilstein gas-pressure shock absorbers for motorcycles for almost 50 years. But it hasn’t been a big player in the market. This move to go after high-performance superbike customers is likely a signal that it plans to do more in this space. The company did say it plans to offer other suspension kits and expand its offerings. The BMW S 1000 RR is where the company will start and it will expand out from there. Pricing for these suspension kits has not yet been announced, but you can expect the price to fall in line with other high-end suspension kits from companies like Ohlins, Showa, WP, and K-Tech. 6. To the Top of the World Dutch adventure motorcyclist Sjaak Lucassen will take the trip of a lifetime on one of the fastest sportbikes out there. He’ll ride his modified Yamaha YZF-R1 to the North Pole from Anchorage, Alaska. Over the course of the trip, Lucassen will cover 3,000 miles over hundreds of miles of sea ice. Because he has to cross so much sea ice, he will have to go during the coldest time of the year, according to ADV Pulse. His trip is set to begin in January of 2021. It will take three seasons and over two years to complete. Because he’ll be running at the coldest time of the year, he will battle temperatures as low as -40 degrees F. According to ADV Pulse, his biggest fear is the temperature climbing and he having to deal with deep snowdrifts and cracks in the ice that could swallow his bike. To combat this he will receive weather updates via satellite. There’s also the threat of polar bears. He will have to avoid them. He will pull a sled behind his motorcycle with food, tools, and camping gear. He will take on the quest in three different stages. The first will be from Anchorage, Alaska, to Tuktoyaktuk, Canada. The second will be from Tuktoyaktuk to Ward Hunt Island, which is the longest portion. The third will be from Ward Hunt Island to the North Pole. This last stretch will be the most challenging due to the ice’s condition. Lucassen had the idea to do this run while on an around-the-world ride in 1995. It’s a crazy journey, but I’m looking forward to covering his progress over the next few years. 7. Spreading the Good Honda has a new CT 125. It’s essentially the Super Cub built for the trail and looks like the CT’s of old. It’s a bike that a lot of people are extremely excited for, myself included. The motorcycle will hit showrooms in Asia first, and then it will come to other areas of the world. Europe appears to be next. According to MoreBikes, recent EU patent office documentation suggests Honda will bring the bike to Europe soon. It would only make sense for Honda to continue spreading the goodness that is the CT 125 around the world from there. The company will likely bring the bike to North America at some point in the future. When it does I will seriously be considering one of these little badass machines, and judging by the response in the comments from our readers, I won’t be the only one. I would hope this bike is reasonably priced. It should come in close or perhaps a little more than the Super Cub and that makes total sense to me. The Super Cub is reasonably priced, so Honda better be ready to take people’s money. I have a feeling this CT 125 will be a hit with a lot of different people. It is the perfect around-town bike with some do-it-all capability. You can take this little billygoat off-road. Count me in, Honda. 8. Is It Really Surprising? Motorcycle sales had been slowing down, and then the Coronavirus pandemic hit, and they really took a nosedive. According to news reports, India, the world’s biggest motorcycle market has seen some serious drops. Some as high as 62 percent, according to The Hindu Business Line. Hero MotoCorp was down 43 percent, Royal Enfield was down 44 percent, Bajaj was down 55 percent, and TVS Motor Company was down the most at 62 percent. The big foreign players in the Indian market were down a lot, too. Suzuki, and Honda both saw notable declines in business, and other bike manufacturers saw drops as well. European markets were down, too. According to Motociclismo, the market went from being up 14.4 percent in Italy to being down 66 percent when compared to the same month last year. Overall, for the year so far, sales were down 24 percent across Italy. Other markets in Europe fared a little better, but they still saw declines. At this time, I’m not seeing much info about the North American markets since the COVID-19 outbreak, but many bike manufacturers had already reported a slow-down in sales ahead of the pandemic, and it would stand to reason that sales would be tanking in the U.S. and Canada as well. None of this is surprising. Many dealerships are closed, and people are supposed to be sheltering in place. It’s not a time to go out and buy a motorcycle, and I would expect that to continue until the pandemic ends or at least slows down and the economy opens back up. Judging by what health experts are advising, that could be a while out, still. The post Motorcycle Sales Take a Hard Downward Turn Due to COVID-19 appeared first on webBikeWorld. Source
  9. For Streetbikes Aerodynamics is one area of motorcycle design that is getting a fair amount of attention lately. The focus in on reducing drag and increasing downforce, especially for sportbikes and track-focused motorcycles. Wings on the front of the bike are usually the first go-to, but Honda is doing things differently. The company recently filed some patents for aerodynamic elements attached to the rear of the bike. The patents were spotted by Cycle World. The design is a super stubby tail with a unique tunnel element attached to the end of the tail. This is designed to channel air through the little bit of bodywork. As Cycle World points out, shorter tails on motorcycles have become common. It used to be that bike makers were doing fatter rear ends to help send air around the bike that came off the rider. Now the designs have changed. This approach isn’t new, but the specific design is. Honda takes it a bit further, adding a small wing and hoping to reduce wind resistance and increase downforce on the tail of the motorcycle. This design element might seem most at home on a race track, but Cycle World says it has roadgoing applications. The publication points to the fact that there are street bike lights incorporated into the design. There’s also a license plate bracket. So, it would seem that Honda is thinking of putting this on motorcycles designed for street use not track use. 10. A Super Unique Engine Design There’s a unique Vincent-HRD 998cc Series-A that will go up for auction in August. The motorcycle was a factory demonstrator and a road test machine in 1938 and 1955. It recorded over 100 mph at Brooklands in 1938. According to Bonhams, the bike could be the last machine to leave the factory, and it’s one of only 77 Series A Rapides. The bike was manufactured in 1938, but it never left the factory until 1959. The unique engine here is said to have been crafted after two single-cylinder engine drawings were accidentally stacked together. That’s an awesome story, and I sure hope it’s true. The engine design does look interesting, and the performance of the bike is said to be extremely impressive for the time. The original sales brochure for the 1938 Rapide said the following about the bike: “The performance is electric. Power appears almost limitless, yet it is so smooth and controllable that it is a delight to ride, even in thick traffic. There is only one snag we have discovered in owning a “Rapide.” You never get a scrap with another machine, because no ordinary motorcycle can live with a “Rapide.” Here, at last, is a performance equal to the fastest T.T. models, coupled with silence, comfort, and tractability. A true Jekyll and Hyde.” This bike will go up for auction at the Summer Strafford Sale that will be held on August 15 and 16. It’s a rescheduling of the event. At that auction, the bike is expected to fetch between $240,000 and $270,000. To learn more, check out the listing on Bonham’s site. 11. Keeping Busy During COVID-19 With a large portion of the world’s population working from home and generally staying at home, we’re all trying to find ways to stay sane. For us motorcyclists, it’s even tougher. All we want to do is go out and ride as the weather warms up. Richard Hammond is no exception. He decided to do his own version of Long Way Round, the epic journey that Charlie Boorman and Ewan McGregor did on BMW motorcycles. The catch? Hammond had to stay home while doing it. As you can imagine, he doesn’t leave his home, so it’s not quite as big of an adventure as one would hope. That said, the motorcycles and cars showcased in the video are some serious eye candy. In the video, Hammond tools around his backyard parking area. The bikes included in the video are a 1929 BMW R52 and a Sunbeam from the same era but far less advanced than the BMW. What struck me about the video was not Hammond’s silly antics or the fact that at one point he runs into a gate with the motorcycle, slightly bending the front fender. What surprised me was just how much the R52 looks like the new BMW R 18. I liked the R 18 when I first saw it, but you can see exactly how it harkens back to BMW’s early bikes, and that makes it all the more special to me. Anyway, you can check out the video below. 12. Wild Looking The Italian motorcycle builder Vyrus has a new bike and it’s wild. The Vyrus Aylen 988 features a 1,298 L-twin engine from a Ducati Panigale. Pair that with some wild styling and Vyrus’ trademark front end design and you have a futuristic motorcycle that looks somewhat like the Bimota Tesi H2. The bike almost looks front-end heavy with the unique steering and suspension linkages and the large fairing. The styling is all full of sharp angles and dark gray panels and carbon fiber. It’s a bike that is sure to catch your eye. The bike also gets carbon fiber wheels, a unique tan seat, and a magnesium double omega design frame. This is a weird bike, but it’s one that is tough to look away from. Personally, I find it totally over the top and silly looking, but I bet it rips pretty hard with that 205 Ducati engine in it. I also wonder how well that complicated front end setup is like and how it wears over time. The steering is a hydraulic system and seems to me to be overly complicated, but maybe it’s awesome. For more info on Vyrus and the motorcycles it makes, you can check out the company’s website. Like its bike, the website is interesting to look at and packed with all kinds of goodies. 13. 2020 Is A Great Year for Ducati Motorcycles Ducati has been killing it lately. The company ended the 2019 year on a high note, and it’s 2020 lineup looks equally impressive. Even more so, if I’m being honest. The company keeps adding the kind of bikes that folks want to buy and ride, and that’s the recipe for success in this business. Here’s what’s on sale in 2020. Diavel 2020 Ducati Diavel 1260 / 1260 S The Italian power cruiser is unlike any other bike out there. Yes, you can lump it in with Triumph’s Rocket 3 and some of the other super high-powered cruisers, but the Diavel 1260 is really a different animal. The base 1260 is a beast of a machine and then there’s the 1260 S that takes things up a notch with more advanced features and additional amenities. The powertrain on this bike consists of a 1,262cc DVT L-twin that puts out 159 hp and 95 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The bike also gets cornering ABS, traction control, and Ducati Wheelie Control, among other features. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati XDiavel / XDiavel S The Ducati XDiavel is more of the same Diavel bike but with a slightly different formula. The XDiavel (and XDiavel S) are slightly less powerful and a little sleeker to look at. The bike is still a serious powerhouse and something that’s hard not to enjoy. The bike features a 1262cc twin engine that makes 152 hp and 93 lb-ft of torque. The throttle is a ride-by-wire system and there’s the Ducati Power Launch allowing you to, well, launch powerfully. This is the Dragster of the Ducati lineup with that system. The bike also gets a host of tech features much like the Diavel shown above. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More Hypermotard 2020 Ducati Hypermotard 950 / 950 SP Not a fan of the whole power cruiser thing? Want something more capable and ready for anything you can throw at it? The Hypermotard 950 (and 950 SP) are for you. This is a bike designed for the hooligans of the world. It’s sporty, powerful, and ready to deliver unlimited excitement. The motorcycle features a 937cc engine that makes 114 hp and 71 lb-ft of torque. The bike also comes with modern technology like ABS and powered USB socket. The SP version of the bike gets a Ducati Quick Shifter some upgrades suspension and some other goodies that the base model misses out on. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More Monster 2020 Ducati Monster 797 The Ducati Monster has been a staple in the brand’s lineup for decades and it shows no signs of slowing down. The Monster is aptly named and the 797 version is the bottom of the ladder. It’s a bike positioned as an entry to the Ducati brand and what an entry-level machine it is. The motorcycle features an 803cc engine that pumps out 73 hp and 49 lb-ft of torque. Is it the most extreme Monster out there? Of course not, but it’s more than adequate to give you Ducati fever. This bike is a killer machine. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Monster 821 / 821 Stealth Take a step up from the Monster 797 and you’ll find the Monster 821 (and 821 Stealth) waiting for you with open arms. This bike is a little beefier. Ducati says its there to pay homage to the Monster 800 that revolutionized things more than 25 years ago. I see the resemblance. There’s also a blacked-out Stealth version you can buy. The motorcycle offers up 109 hp and 63 lb-ft of torque thanks to an 821 cc engine. Other notable qualities to this bike are the various ride modes and power modes, Bosch ABS, and traction control. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Monster 1200 / 1200 S Want the most monstrous Monster? That’s the Monster 1200 (and 1200 S). The 1200 sits at the top of the heap and does so as one of the sportiest naked bikes out there. The motorcycle is built for tearing up streets and curvy roads and is equally happy on a track. The 1200 S version of the bike adds some better equipment and some aesthetic upgrades. The engine is a 1,198cc mill that puts out 147 hp and 91 lb-ft of torque. The bike comes with extra goodies like Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, Ducati Wheelie Control (fun!), and various riding modes. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More Streetfighter 2020 Ducati Streetfighter V4 / V4 S Do you love sportbikes but also love the openness and the wind on you like with a naked machine? Well, the Streetfighter is for you. This bike is basically a Panigale V4 that has been stripped of its fairings. The bike then got some wide-set handlebars. It’s a naked bike unlike any other and it’s ready for action. The engine is a 1,103cc powerhouse producing 208 hp and 90.4 lb-ft of torque. That makes for a blurringly fast machine. This warp-speed rocket also comes in V4 S trim, which adds better suspension, wheels, and more. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More Multistrada 2020 Ducati Multistrada 950 / 950 S The Multistrada is a sport-touring machine that also competes with some of the ADV bikes out there. It’s street-oriented, but Ducati has some more off-road-ready models I’ll discuss below. The Multistrada 950 and 950 S are the bottom rungs of the ladder for this design, but even that is a pretty high bar. The Multistrada is an impressive bike perfect for a wide variety of riding duties. The engine in the Multistrada 950 is a 937cc twin-cylinder one that produces 113 hp and 71 lb-ft of torque. The bike comes with ABS and many other electronic goodies. The 950 S version of the bike gets spoked wheels, a quick-shifter, and some other unique equipment. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Multistrada 1260 / 1260 S / Pikes Peak Edition If the 950 version of the Multistrada piqued your interest, but you want more power, then look no further than the Multistrada 1260. This bike, and the 1260 S, Take the design to new levels adding power, features and more. There’s also a Pikes Peak Edition version of the motorcycle that gets some performance parts to commemorate Ducati’s winning heritage at the event. The motorcycle gets a 1,262cc engine that makes a strong 158 hp and 95.5 lb-ft of torque. That’s more than enough for any adventure. There are plenty of features, but if you’re a performance junkie, the Pikes Peak edition is the one to get with a performance exhaust system and Ohlins suspension. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Multistrada 1260 Enduro Need the off-roader of the bunch? Check out the Multistrada 1260 Enduro. The bike is designed to goo off the beaten path while still being a winner on the road as well. The motorcycle gets tons of handy features, too, including Bosch Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, riding modes, power modes, Ducati Wheelie Control, Ducati Cornering Lights, and Vehicle Hold Control. The engine in the Multistrada 1260 Enduro is a 1,262cc mill that puts out 158 hp and 94 lb-ft of torque. This is the Ducati to get if you plan on going anywhere and everywhere. It has a 955cc twin engine that makes 155hp and 76.7 lb-ft of torque. Pair that with the fact that it looks as sharp as a knife and as beautiful as an Italian supermodel and you have a motorcycle that’s unforgettable. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Panigale V4 / V4 S / Corse With the V2 out of the way, we can get into the Panigale V4 models. The base V4 (and V4 S) received updates for 2020. The motorcycle is a track-day fiend and a truly scary sportbike. The motorcycle gets the new Aero Pack that improves airflow overall vehicle stability. This is the best V4 Ducati has ever made. The bike features a V4 engine with a displacement of 1,103cc and a power output of 234 hp and 83 lb-ft of torque. The motorcycle is built to do one thing really well, and that’s to go around racetracks really quickly. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More SuperSport 2020 Ducati SuperSport / SuperSport S Feast your eyes on a thing of beauty. The Ducati SuperSport is a unique blend of comfort, versatility, and performance. The bike is visually compact and lightweight. It’s sleek and sharp and very sporty. In my opinion, it’s the best-looking Ducati out there right now. Like a super-sporty shark ready to make a kill. The bike is powered by a 937cc engine that makes a strong 110 hp and 69 lb-ft of torque. It’s not the most powerful Ducati, but that’s not the point of this machine. It’s designed to be sporty and comfy and just generally awesome. It delivers. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More Scrambler 2020 Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 Oh, Ducati and your scramblers. The company has many, and to kick us off, we’ll look to the Sixty2. This bike is the most basic and features a modest powerplant that more than gets the job done for a lot of folks. Pair that with modern classic styling and you have an awesome bike. The Sixty2 gets a 399cc L-twin Desmodromic air-cooled engine that makes 40 hp and 24 lb-ft of torque. The motorcycle isn’t a wildly fancy thing. It’s just a good scrambler motorcycle that leans more towards the street. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled Need a bike with more displacement and a penchant for the off-road? The Desert Sled is here to save the day. The scrambler blends old-school off-roading style with new-school technology and power. This is a killer bike and it’s happy pretty much anywhere you want to take it. The motorcycle gets an 803cc L-twin Desmodromic engine that makes 73 hp and 49 lb-ft of torque. The thing I like about this motorcycle is its looks, but Ducati as endowed the motorcycle with plenty of good content, too. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Scrambler Cafe Racer Need a Ducati cafe racer? Well, you can go back in time and buy yourself a Ducati Sport Classic, or you can just get the Scrambler Cafe Racer. This bike is a good looking machine. It blends the middleweight Scrambler platform with cafe racer styling well. The motorcycle, as you can probably expect, gets an 803cc L-twin Desmodromic engine that makes 73 hp and 49 lb-ft of torque. While the Ducati Scrambler Cafe Racer isn’t quite as lean and beautiful as some other cafe racers out there, it does a good job of getting close and is worthy of some consideration. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Scrambler Full Throttle The Ducati Scrambler Full Throttle looks like an angry bee in scrambler form. It’s a yellow and black hornet that’ll kick up dust with the best of the other middleweight motorcycles out there. This bike is handsome and knows it. It’s also a good performer. The bike features an 803cc L-twin Desmodromic engine that makes 73 hp and 49 lb-ft of torque. Yep, mechanically it’s not all that different from many of the other Scramblers out there but just look at it and its two-tone paint job. Fantastic. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Scrambler Icon The Scrambler Icon is another middleweight variant of the Scrambler lineup. This bike harkens back to the Scramblers of old with a large seat perfect for two-up riding. The motorcycle also gets a killer two-tone, retro-inspired paint job. The bike has the obligatory 803cc L-twin Desmodromic engine that makes 73 hp and 49 lb-ft of torque. Pair that with a fancy exhaust system with what looks like a futuristic fart cannon on the end of it and you have a bike that’s easy to love. Company Website See Specs, Photos, & More 2020 Ducati Scrambler 1100 The Ducati Scrambler 1100 is the first step up to the big-boy ranks and the bike is worthy of your attention.
